E-Sail Optimal Trajectories to Heliostationary Points

The aim of this paper is to investigate the performance a robotic spacecraft, whose primary propulsion system an electric solar wind sail (E-sail), in mission heliostationary point (HP)—that is, static equilibrium heliocentric and inertial reference frame. A spacecraft placed at given HP with zero velocity maintains that position provided on-board thrust able counterbalance Sun’s gravitational force. Due finite amount storable propellant mass, prolonged toward may be considered as typical application propellantless system. In respect, previous research has been concentrated on capability high-performance (photonic) sails reach maintain such condition. However, case solar-sail-based requires design propulsive characteristics are well beyond current or near-future technology. This shows medium-performance E-sail offer viable alternative use photonic sails.
